ITIL 4 stresses the integration of various frameworks and methodologies with service management operating models to meet the business needs effectively and efficiently. Another important part of the ITIL 4 is management practices. Management practices in ITIL 4 can be defined as a set of organizational resources developed for executing work, achieving a purpose, and adapting to new organizational dynamics.


ITIL 4 management practices consider all the existing organization's characteristics, such as innovation, speed to market, fast responding to market dynamics, dynamic resource scaling, and so on. Therefore, it is important to use proper management practices for services, projects, products, design, transition, build, test, and delivery, as well as the ability to adapt and respond to rapidly changing conditions.


ITIL 4 Management Practices Categories

ITIL 4 management practices are divided into three categories:

a. General Management Practices

Practices that can be used across the organization to ensure the success of the company and the services it provides. It includes strategy management, portfolio management, service financial management, and so on.

b. Service Management Practices

Practices that apply to the development, deployment, delivery, and support of certain services in an organization. It includes business analysis, service design and desk, availability management, and so on.

c. Technical Management Practices

Technical Management Practices

Technical management refers to a set of procedures that regulate how IT organizations set up and implement their systems' technological core. Technical management is defined as a "function" in the ITIL framework. As a result, when the ITIL refers to technical management practices, it is referring to the people and tools who will put those processes in place.


In any IT context, technical management is critical because it creates the foundation for developing and validating complex systems. ITIL technical management entails a variety of practices, including the ones listed below.


a. Deployment Management

The goal of deployment management is to get new or modified hardware and software components, procedures, documentation, and other configuration items into live environments (e.g. PROD). The deployment management Practice may also be involved in component deployment to other environments (e.g. Staging or Testing).


b. Infrastructure and Platform Management

These firewalls filter packets not only based on the service for which they are intended, but also by other characteristics, such as the HTTP request string. While application-layer gateways provide significant data protection, they can have a significant impact on network performance and are difficult to monitor.


c. Software Development & Management

This management is used to ensure that applications meet the utility and warranty demands of internal and external stakeholders in terms of functionality, reliability, availability, maintainability, compliance, and auditability.


ITIL management practices play a very critical role in aligning business and IT goals by assisting in the integration of business goals with IT decision-making. As a result, they assist in maximizing the return on IT resources and avoiding unforeseen disputes between IT teams and other business units.
