Communication skills are vital to a healthy and efficient workplace. Often categorized as a “soft skill” or interpersonal skill, communication is the act of sharing information from one person to another person or group of people. Furthermore, these are several key types of communication in workplace described as follows.


Verbal

Verbal communication is the use of language to transfer information through speaking or sign language. It is often used during presentation, phone calls, video conferences, meeting and 1 on 1 conversations.


Non-verbal

Non-verbal communication is the use of body language, gestures, mimics and facial expression to convey information to others. It is helpful when trying to understand other people feelings and thoughts.


Written

Written communication is the act of writing, typing or printing symbols like letters and numbers in order to convey information. It is helpful because it provides a record of information for reference. Further, it is commonly used in emails, chats, books, pamphlets, blogs, letters, memos and so on.


Visual

Visual communication is the act of using photographs, art, drawings, sketches, charts and graphs to convey information. Visuals are often used as an aid during presentations to provide helpful context alongside written or verbal communication.
