3 Elements of Motivation Process

Tuesday, 15 June 2021

Motivation is defined as the energy or the force that stimulates a person to act towards the fulfilment of one's desired goal. Before one can achieve a deeper understanding of motivation, one must be able to gain knowledge of its basic process and the elements involved in it. The motivation process involves several elements namely:

Motive

A motive is something that drives someone to take an action; anything that evokes a person to behave or act. Action comes from motive. Motives are connected to a person's cognitive processes and influence their behavior in one or more ways. A motive is a need or desire that creates an unbalanced state, both physiologically and psychologically, within a person.

Behavior

Behavior is an action that results from a person's motives. Behavior can also be seen as a series of activities carried out by a person to achieve a goal. Human behavior can be classified as normal or abnormal. Any behavior that pertains to accepted societal patterns is called normal behavior whereas that is against social norms is called abnormal behavior.

Goals

To correct the state of imbalance caused by a motive, goals are needed to be achieved. If motive acts as the drives and behavior serves as the means, then goals are the ends. The achievement of a goal through a behavior tends to satisfy the motive. Goals can be inward, such as self-improvement, and/or outward, as in higher position, greater power or a better salary.

Conclusion

To sum up, by understanding those elements of motivation process, it will help leaders to motivate their team and employees that will eventually encourage them to be more productive and give useful contributions to the organization.
